The Lion and Sun (Persian: شیر و خورشید) is one of the primary emblems of modern-day Iran, previously a central element in Iran's national flag until the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The motif itself showcases ancient and contemporary Iranian customs, gaining widespread acceptance in 12th century Iran.[1] Derived from a combination of celestial configurations: the position of the sun within Leo,[1][2] an astrological concept originating from Babylonian mythology and Middle Eastern traditions.[2][3] This intricate symbol holds many rich meanings across history. Initially, as an exclusively scientific and secular icon, it solely served as an astronomical representation of zodiacal symbols. As Iranian society under the rule of the Safavid dynasty merged its spiritual essence with that of Shia Islam,[1] this once abstract representation started taking on more distinct form, illustrating the delicate balance between state power and Islamic laws.[1] With time passing, during the Qajar reign, the Lion and Sun became emblematic symbols symbolizing unity and national pride. During Fat′h-Ali Shah Qajar's rule and beyond, drastic transformations altered its shape: crowns adorned its crown to honor the ruling monarchy, while de-emphasizing the predominantly Shia connotations of Iranian monarchs. Over several periods within Qajar's dynasty, the significance shifted and transformed multiple times until the final blow from the Iranian Revolution. In each change, interpretation differed – be it seen as a powerful metaphor for Shia Imam Ali, representing an unyielding warrior Rostam or a motherland in mythical sense or an esteemed figure of Iranian legends like Jamshid;[3] This continuous alteration opened grounds to diverse perceptions surrounding national identity in 20th-century Iran.[4] Certain politicians, however, argued the need for replacing the symbol altogether, proposing Derafsh Kaviani as possible new emblem; However this debate ultimately culminated with it's gradual withdrawal from public space due to The Iranian Revolution of 1979 and replaced by Coat of Arms.
