On this lintel at Yaxchilan, the sacrificial offering of blood unleashes a prophetic manifestation of Yat-Balam, founding ancestor of the dynasty of Yaxchilan. Emerging from the gaping front jaws of a massive double-headed serpent rearing above Lady Xoc is the warrior form of this ancestral spirit, grasping a spear and shield in hand. She gazes upward at the apparition she has summoned forth, her eyes fixed intently on its majestic presence. In her left hand, she bears a blood-letting bowl containing instruments of sacrifice: a sting-ray spine and an obsidian lancet, sharpened to perfection for the sacred ritual ahead.
