One of three lintels from Structure 23 at Yaxchilan, this scene vividly captures Lord Shield Jaguar and his principal wife Lady Xoc in the midst of a dramatic bloodletting rite that took place on 9.13.17.15.12 5 eb 15 mac in the Maya calendar - a date equivalent to 28 October AD 709. Standing tall on the left, the king brandishes a fiery torch, its flames casting an intense glow over the unfolding drama. In front of him, Lady Xoc kneels elegantly clad in an intricately woven huipil, her tongue pierced by a thorn-lined rope that is slowly being pulled through. The rope comes to rest on a woman's basket overflowing with blood-soaked strips of paper cloth.
