The "Z"-shaped reverse-motion linkage alters motion direction. The central rod revolves around a stationary pivot point. By exerting force on the linkage one way, it generates an opposing movement in another direction. If the pivot were off-center, the opposite motion would be amplified or reduced accordingly.
