This substantial sculpture (0.48m x 0.33m) is what remains of a larger Sheela-na-gig unearthed during repair work on a bridge in Caherelly East (LI023-040001). The stone was placed within one of the bridge's support structures, prompting local resident John Hunt to be informed by workmen. It has since been displayed at the Hunt Museum Collection in Limerick City. The carving is missing its head, left hand, and feet but what remains of the body is skillfully carved. A lengthy torso with even breasts and a recessed belly button sits atop a deep, open vulva and anus. The hands are positioned behind the legs, with one remaining intact, featuring four delicate fingers. It's unfortunate that so much of the carving has been lost. A spherical depression can be found on the back of the stone; it is unclear whether this was a deliberately carved feature or a natural erosion of the limestone. Orla Power from UCC documented the Sheela using an Artec Scanner. We appreciate the Hunt Museum staff for granting access to this valuable resource.
