Lilijka Harcerska is a symbol based on the north symbol used in medieval compasses. It indicates the correct path, which was initially marked with the letter T (from tramontana – the northwest wind) and replaced by lilijki at Charles I's request. Charles' heraldic arms included lilia herbs, and it's been said that Flavio Gioja, a Vlosi sailor and inventor, may not have existed and is only a result of a typo. Robert Baden-Powell popularized Lilijka in 1898 when he used it as a badge for the fifth dragoon Guard unit. On December 4th, 1916, The Harcerstwa High Command issued their first official instructions (Order No. L. 11), establishing the lilijka and scout cross as insignia for The Harcerstwa of Poland. In 1927, the letters ONC (the Filareti's slogan - Homeland, Knowledge, Virtue) were placed on the lilijki of ZHP until they were replaced by a more angular shape in 1965. However, many scout troops continued to use the traditional design. The Seventh Harcerstwa High Command returned to the original symbol in 1981. Most harcerstwa organizations in Poland continue to use the traditional lilijka symbol, except for The Stowarzyszenia Harcerstwa Katolickiego Zawisza which uses a modified version called the Lilijka Zawiszacka, included in the eight-pointed cross. In 1989, a lilijki was designed by instructor Małgorzata Wojtkiewicz for ZHR. Symbolism of Lilijki Lilijki often feature two stars on its plates representing the pinnacle of harcer ideals included in The Law and Oath. Lilijka is adorned with an oak wavy cord encircling a lasso made from twine. An anchor lies in the center of the lilijki, symbolizing doing good deeds every day. IgŁa or a needle located in the middle of the lilijki represents the compass needle pointing to the right path. In 2019, a Harcerstwa lilijki became part of the krzyz harcerski.
