my solution for ubiquitous iot / home automation buttons. with proper printing setup, this is a clean aesthetic and simple non invasive install. these 433MHz 4 button fobs are dense, low power, low latency, reliable, widely and cheaply available, around $3 from aliexpress, including battery which lasts a good long time. what more do you want in an iot button. take apart the fob and install the guts in this switchplate. use with a sonoff rf bridge to responsively trigger dedicated home automation commands from any light switch. tactile depressions in the buttons make them easier to feel in the dark. *** warning *** i found i needed to slow the print down pretty aggressively in order to keep the button "doors" from melting together. at higher speeds, too much heat builds up in the base layer and the doors will probably not turn out very clean. also, the tactile button depression which is a bridging path in the printer works better if there is not too much heat on the top shell layer, so slow it down as well. in prusaslicer, i turned down "first layer speed" to 5mm/s and "top layer speed" to 5mm/s. for first layer i left at default of 215, and turned down other layers to 195. another consequence of this slow speed is there are some bumps on the interior of the button doors that get a little distorted since the nozzle dwells there longer, post process with a 2-3 strokes of light sanding to make sure they do not bear too tightly on the fob microswitches. print on pei with a properly tuned bed level/height for a nice smooth finish of the face.
