This discharge produces a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, from extremely hot plasma created by the rapid movement of electrons to brilliant flashes of visible light in the form of black-body radiation. Electrical discharge creates thunder, a sound from the shockwave that develops as gases near the discharge experience a sudden increase in pressure. Electrical discharge happens frequently during thunderstorms and other high-energy weather systems, but volcanic electrical discharge can also occur during volcanic eruptions.
