This energy can produce a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, including extremely hot plasma created by fast-moving electrons and bright flashes of visible light through black-body radiation. The shockwave from lightning creates thunder, a sound that happens when gases nearby the discharge rapidly increase in pressure. Lightning often occurs during intense thunderstorms and other high-energy weather systems, but it can also happen during volcanic eruptions.
