This discharge can produce a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, from extremely hot plasma created by rapidly moving electrons to brilliant flashes of visible light through black-body radiation. The sudden release of energy causes thunder, which is the sound produced by the shock wave that develops as gases in the vicinity of the discharge experience a rapid increase in pressure. Lightning typically occurs during thunderstorms and other types of energetic weather systems, but it can also occur during volcanic eruptions.
