Lighted Companion Cube
thingiverse
Introducing a more interactive version of the iconic Portal weighted Companion Cube - the Lighted Companion Cube! This cuddly cube boasts an impressive array of 25 white LEDs in four concentric zones, controlled separately for a customizable light experience. The radiant side illuminates with adjustable brightness, while the ambient side features RGB LEDs to reflect your mood. A charge/discharge circuit ensures the cube conserves battery life by dimming and switching off when needed. Despite its refined design, this DIY project is a work in progress; the creator advises that they've only made one and encourages anyone interested to reach out for advice. The cube is constructed using recycled acrylic pieces of varying thicknesses and colors, with individual side panels assembled first. Electronics are soldered onto a perforated MDF board, insulated with cereal box cardboard, and placed in the designated compartments within the cube. Key components can be sourced from eBay at affordable prices. For an optimized fit, use a 2x3 battery pack and secure it with a small piece of foam. Be mindful of light leakage by blackening the ends of tab connections where they meet the front panel.
