Light up hedron (pocket version!)
thingiverse
Hi! I created a 4.5 x 2.16 x 1.04 inch (110 x 55 x 26.5 mm) "hedron shard", inspired by Wizards of the Coast's Khans of Tarkir trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIC1M_eKagk), seen in attached screen capture. This piece features a hole for easy mounting on top, and the body includes a slot perfect for attaching string LED lights - I purchased mine from Adafruit! (http://www.adafruit.com/products/895 or http://tinyurl.com/pfy5hjn if shipping is a concern). The design allows for convenient access to the on/off switch located at the base of the piece. Three slots within the body perfectly fit two identical side panel pieces and one front piece, designed with easy assembly in mind. To bring this project to life: (1) 3D Print out the main body (ABS or PLA worked great for me) (2) Print or laser-cut the accompanying panel pieces - I preferred laser cutting for its precise details, and looked amazing with semi-transparent material from McMaster.com (3) Add your lights and (4) Secure everything in place with glue or tape Optional: Consider adding a diffusive backing to the panels and base. How It Was Designed I built this model using Solidworks 2013. To be honest, I'm not thrilled about my initial design choice - I can spot flaws now that might have been avoided if I had planned ahead. Although it served as a learning experience, I've moved on to newer projects. This one's off my priority list and unlikely to see updates in the future.
