Light tower base with RJ45 connector
prusaprinters

Needed a way to get several light towers (indicating 3D printer needs attention, or job done) back to the server room. Spare Ethernet lines already exist by every machine, so why not use that to carry the 12v to the light towers?

Based on the light tower from: https://www.adafruit.com/product/2993

Requires supports in the RJ45 keystone and around the hole wires will pass through.

In my case I'm using wires in the 568B standard as follows…

RED LED - pin 1 - w/orange

YELLOW LED - pin 6 - green

GREEN LED - pin 3 - w/green

ORANGE BUZZER - pin 2 - orange

BROWN +12VDC COMMON - pin 8 - brown

Note: This does not magically make the light tower Ethernet nor POE enabled - duh! Rather I am just using the CAT5/6 cable to get all the wires back to the server room. Once there every light tower gets plugged into a custom Arduino setup which based on printer status (paused, or finished) lights up the appropriate light next to the printer (yellow for paused/needs attention, green for finished, I'm also using the built in buzzer which is louder than the printer's beeper if I don't take action after 1 minute.
