A wire filament-based incandescent light source emits visible light through high temperature heating. The glass or fused quartz bulb encasing protects against oxidation and is filled with inert gas or vacuum. In a halogen lamp, filament evaporation is mitigated by a chemical process that redistributes metal vapor onto the filament, thus prolonging life.
