Human beings rely heavily on lifeboats or liferafts, which are small, rigid or inflatable boats designed for emergency evacuation in the event of a disaster aboard a ship. Laws require lifeboat drills to be conducted on larger commercial ships, while rafts (liferafts) are also employed. In military settings, a lifeboat may serve as a whaleboat, dinghy, or gig. Cruise ships often use their tenders as lifeboats, and recreational sailors typically carry inflatable liferafts, though some prefer small proactive lifeboats that are harder to sink and can be sailed to safety. Inflatable lifeboats can be equipped with auto-inflation devices (carbon dioxide or nitrogen) or mechanical pumps. A quick release mechanism is fitted on ships so that the device automatically inflates the lifeboat, allowing it to break free of the sinking vessel. Commercial aircraft are also required to carry auto-inflating liferafts in case of an emergency water landing, while offshore oil platforms have liferafts available. Ship-launched lifeboats can be lowered from davits on a ship's deck and are difficult to sink under normal circumstances. The cover serves as protection from the elements, can collect rainwater, and is typically made of a reflective or fluorescent material that is highly visible. Lifeboats come equipped with oars, flares, mirrors for signaling, first aid supplies, food and water for several days, and some are even more capably equipped to permit self-rescue. The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Life-Saving Appliance Code (LSA) mandate that certain emergency equipment be carried on each lifeboat and liferaft used on international voyages. Modern lifeboats carry an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and either a radar reflector or Search and Rescue Transponder (SART).
