LiDAR + UAV model of Menara
sketchfab
Scientists have created a LiDAR and UAV-derived SfM model of the world's tallest tropical tree, a Shorea Faguetiana known as "Menara," located in North Borneo's Danum Valley Conservation Area. The tree stands at an impressive 100.8 meters tall according to measurements taken by climber Unding Jami using a tape measure in August 2018. Researchers Chris Chandler and Doreen Boyd of the University of Nottingham discovered the tree, which belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family. A huge thank you goes out to Yadvinder Malhi, Mat Disney, Phil Wilkes, Andrew Burt, Noreen Majalap, Reuben Nilus, zlin bin Sailim, Azwan bin Tamring, Fredino John, Ahmad bin Jelling and Sabidee Rizan for their contributions. Additionally, the logistical team at the Danum Valley Field Centre deserves recognition: Johnny Larenus, Mohd Fadil nin Abd Karim, Rusili Elizabath and Fyen Lyvicy Thomas played a crucial role in making this research possible.
