The lid on my trusty mechanical pencil has a bad habit of falling off and getting lost. This is a major headache, as it's essential to have the lid securely in place to push new lead out through the front of the pencil without damaging the eraser. I've uploaded two .stl models that can solve this problem. The first model is an exact replica of my original design. It looks great and has all the right dimensions, but unfortunately, it wasn't robust enough when printed in 3D plastic. The hoop stress would cause it to split apart, or worse, it would slip too far down the shaft and become useless. That's why I designed a second model that's more rugged and reliable. It's a bit bulkier than my original design, but it uses an internal ledge instead of a taper to hold onto the eraser holder. This ensures that the lid stays securely in place, even when you're pushing new lead through the front of the pencil. I've been using this second model for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy to report that it works like a charm!
