A library is a meticulously curated collection of sources of information and similar resources carefully handpicked by experts and made accessible to a specific community for reference or borrowing, often in a quiet environment that fosters intense study. It provides direct access to material through physical or digital means, and may be a physical location, a virtual space, or both. A library's collection can include a vast array of items such as books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, e-books, audiobooks, databases, table games, video games and many other formats. Libraries come in all sizes, ranging from small collections to massive repositories of millions of items. The word for library in modern languages is derived from the Ancient Greek term βιβλιοθήκη (bibliothēkē), which originally referred to a bookcase, and was later adopted into Latin as bibliotheca. The earliest libraries were essentially archives of the first written form – clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in Sumer, dating back an astonishing 4,600 years. In ancient Greece, personal or private libraries made up of written books began to appear in the 5th century BC. By the 6th century AD, during the close of the Classical period, the great Mediterranean world's most renowned libraries remained those of Constantinople and Alexandria. Around this same time, the esteemed libraries of Timbuktu were established, attracting scholars from all corners of the globe.
