The first aircraft carrier ever commissioned into the People's Liberation Army Navy is the Liaoning. The ship was originally laid down as a multirole aircraft carrier called Riga for the Soviet Navy in 1988. Launched on December 4, 1988, it was renamed Varyag in 1990. In 1998, the ship was purchased by China and towed to Dalian Shipyard in northeastern China. After a complete overhaul and sea trials, the ship was officially commissioned into the PLAN as Liaoning on September 25, 2012.
