LG Sunrise Mount for Makerbot Replicator 2/2X
thingiverse
I created this mount to attach some affordable cellphones to the front of my Replicator 2/2X for remote print monitoring purposes. I discovered the LG Sunrise for TracFone at Walmart for an incredibly low price of $9. This budget-friendly Android phone doesn't require activation on a cellular network, which was a significant advantage for me. Although its camera is relatively basic (2MP), it works exceptionally well for keeping tabs on prints remotely and is affordable enough to add to all my printers. By attaching a cheap fisheye lens, I get an even wider view of my prints; several options are available on Amazon for under $5. For software, I installed IP Webcam Pro Pro on the phones. This $4 app provides both a web portal and IP camera access remotely. The Sunrise can run this 24/7 while plugged into the wall without draining its battery. With this inexpensive setup ($13 total), you're able to emulate IP cameras like the Dropcam at a fraction of the price. This was a great foundation for my modifications. Next, I took some measurements using my calipers to approximate the shape of the Sunrise. Although the mount's shape isn't an exact fit to the back of the phone (the curves were difficult to measure), it securely holds onto the phone and has been helping me prevent print failures (and keep my house from burning down) for several months.
