Rubber cones were the springing medium for all Mini models except those fitted with Hydrolastic suspension between 1964 and 1972. Over time, rubber springs harden and exhibit progressive compression rates. Some designers considered steel helical springs but faced space constraints in Mini subframes, requiring very short springs with only three windings. Helical steel springs provide linear compression, which can support better ride quality or be modified for sportier vehicle dynamics depending on the choice of spring material and diameter.
