The Lexus RX, a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by Toyota's luxury division, has seen four generations since its 1998 debut in Japan as the Toyota Harrier. Ranging from compact to mid-size, both front and all-wheel drive configurations have been used with various gasoline powertrain options including V6 engines and hybrid systems. Positioned between the larger GX and LX SUVs and smaller NX crossover in Lexus' lineup, the RX is named for Radiant Crossover and has also been labelled as "Recreation Cross Country" in some markets. The first-generation RX 300 (1998) featured a 3.0-liter V6 engine, while the second-gen (2003) offered RX 300 and RX 330 models with 3.0- and 3.3-liter V6s, respectively. These were replaced by more powerful RX 350s in 2006. A 2.4-liter inline-four engine was also available in the Japanese market Toyota Harrier alongside the V6. The 2005 hybridized gasoline-electric RX 400h (and Harrier Hybrid) arrived with a 3.3-liter second-gen model, and since the third-generation release in 2009, Lexus has offered both RX 350 and RX 450h models, with an entry-level RX 270 available in some Asian markets since 2010.
