Human: This model of a Lewis Structure is made up of 3 straightforward components; the base, the element chip, and the pegs, which represent valence electrons that are essential to understanding atomic behavior. Once printed out, the model can be used as an interactive tool to demonstrate the relationship between an element's group on the periodic table and the number of valence electrons it possesses. This model can also be used to simulate ionic bonds by printing multiple bases and element chips. Lesson Plan and Activity Coming soon Project: Lewis Structure Model Lewis Structure Model Overview: Objectives: * Model the relationship between elements in the same group on the periodic table and the number of valence electrons of their atoms. * Demonstrate the process of ionic bonding through experimentation and simulation. * Create chemical formulas of ionic compounds while modeling the process of ionic bonding. Audience: Students in grades 8-12 Subjects: Physical Science, Chemistry Standards: NGSS: HS-PS1-1. Use the periodic table to predict relative properties of elements based on electron patterns in outermost energy levels. HS-PS1-2. Develop an explanation for a simple chemical reaction outcome based on outermost electron states, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of chemical property patterns. Lesson: Duration: To be determined Preparation: Preparation is ongoing Assessment: Assessment strategies are still being developed
