Lewis Chess Pieces
thingiverse
This is a set of chess pieces created from photographs of the pieces found on the Isle of Lewis carved from whale tooth and walrus bone that are easily accessible online. I have incorporated the three usual pawns into one model. Edit 16_01_2019 Details amended at Ffoligna's request: Please ensure to set the sizes for your chess pieces in your slicing software according to the height you prefer. Sculptris doesn't provide measurements, so the STLs are sized as they were drawn. Edit 15_06_2018, I am just adding a note/acknowledgement to MakeALot who did the Lewis #Chess set that I had modified in tinkercad when I was originally searching for the Lewis Chessmen. Without that step, I would never have started sculpting so thank you! They are printed at 140% of the file size with occasional exceptions! The knight2 is printed at 125%. For reference: the board is 48cm square and each square is 5cm by 5cm. The knight needs to be printed with a little support. Although I have simplified the horse, I still need to add support under the head. I have re-modeled it to a more original version due to its requirement for support. There are now two files for the knight: one with and one without a gap between the neck and face. Edit 31_03_18: I have uploaded Sculptris images of the two different knights for clarification. I apologize... I still need to figure out how to change the STL file orientation. If you know, please advise. Edit: My thanks to Anubis for pointing me at software that can help with this. 22_06_2018 Alternative piece added: a seated bishop, sculptris images included. This piece needs to be printed at 240% in Cura to match my original sizes. It prints fine with no support etc. 30_06_2018 Added alternative piece for the original rook (which should have been listed as Berserker). The alternative is the Warder with shield and sword. Photos were printed in white at 0.2 layer height, no support etc., along with a Sculptris image. 08_07_2018 Uploaded photo of some pieces printed on the Photon in clear resin (avg size 3.5cm tall). If you do print a set, please post a photo so I can see what you've made!
