Lewis Chess Pieces: Complete Set
sketchfab
The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most sought-after treasures. They reveal captivating details about Western Scotland's far-reaching connections to the rest of the world and the rapid growth of chess's popularity in medieval Europe. Eleven exquisite chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland were once part of a massive cache buried on Lewis. The cache contained 93 gaming tokens altogether, including at least four complete chess sets as well as game pieces from other games. Crafted in Norway around the late 12th or early 13th century, these chess pieces are truly exceptional. To discover more about these incredible artifacts, visit www.nms.ac.uk/lewischesspieces.
