The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most prized collections. They reveal captivating stories about Scotland's international relationships and Europe's growing enthusiasm for chess in the Middle Ages. Eleven exceptional chess pieces are showcased at the Museum of Scotland, carefully unearthed from a significant treasure buried on Lewis. The hoard comprises 93 gaming pieces, including at least four comprehensive chess sets alongside components from other board games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century. Their dimensions measure 93mm in height, 43mm in width, and 33mm in depth. Accession number: NMS H.NS 28 Model information: produced by Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark in 2019 using a Canon EOS 750D with a 60mm macro lens, capturing 465 high-resolution images at 24mp. The model was decimated from a 4.2m polygon shape.
