sketchfab
The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most prized possessions. They reveal the intriguing connections between western Scotland and Europe's growing fascination with chess during the Middle Ages. The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a significant treasure buried on Lewis. The treasure comprised 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four complete chess sets as well as pieces from other games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway around the late 12th or early 13th century.
