The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis rank among our most prized collections, offering us captivating glimpses into the far-reaching connections of western Scotland and the steadily growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. Eleven chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland were part of a substantial treasure buried on Lewis. This treasure comprised 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four complete chess sets as well as pieces from various other games. The chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century.
