The medieval chess pieces from Scotland's Lewis island are among our most prized collections. These remarkable artifacts provide fascinating glimpses into the international connections of western Scotland and the rapidly growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. Eleven chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland form part of a substantial hoard unearthed on Lewis. The treasure trove contained 93 gaming pieces in all, including at least four complete chess sets as well as items from other games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century. To learn more about these incredible artifacts, visit www.nms.ac.uk/lewischesspieces.
