The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most prized collections. They provide us with captivating glimpses into the global connections of western Scotland and the increasing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. Nine intricately crafted chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a massive treasure trove buried on Lewis. The treasure contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four complete chess sets as well as pieces from various other games. The exquisite chess pieces were likely created in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century.
