The medieval chess pieces from the island of Lewis in Scotland are among our most prized collections, offering a unique glimpse into the far-reaching connections of western Scotland and the rapid growth of chess popularity across medieval Europe. Eleven chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland were part of a significant treasure trove unearthed on Lewis. The entire hoard consisted of 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four complete chess sets as well as components from other games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century. To learn more about these extraordinary chess pieces, visit www.nms.ac.uk/lewischesspieces.
