The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis remain among our most sought-after collections, offering a unique glimpse into the international connections of western Scotland and the rising popularity of chess in medieval Europe during that time. Eleven chess pieces are on display at the Museum of Scotland, which were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The entire hoard contained 93 gaming pieces, including at least four complete chess sets as well as other game pieces. Most likely, these chess pieces were crafted in Norway sometime between the late 12th and early 13th century.
