The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections, giving us fascinating insights into western Scotland's international connections and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe during that time. The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard unearthed on Lewis. This treasure trove contained 93 gaming pieces altogether, including at least four complete chess sets as well as pieces from other games. It is likely that the chess pieces were crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century. Learn more about these incredible artifacts by visiting www.nms.ac.uk/lewischesspieces.
