The medieval chess pieces originating from the Scottish island of Lewis stand out as some of our most sought-after collections. These intriguing relics offer us unique glimpses into the far-reaching connections of western Scotland and the rapidly growing popularity of chess throughout medieval Europe. Among the eleven chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland, there were a substantial number unearthed as part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard comprised a total of 93 gaming pieces, featuring at least four complete chess sets in addition to pieces from various other games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century. For more information about these remarkable artifacts, please visit www.nms.ac.uk/lewischesspieces.
