sketchfab
The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most prized collections. They offer us captivating glimpses into the global connections of western Scotland and the rising popularity of chess in medieval Europe. The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a substantial cache buried on Lewis. The cache contained 93 gaming pieces altogether, including at least four complete chess sets as well as pieces from other games. These chess pieces were likely crafted in Norway during the late 12th or early 13th century.
