The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are our most popular collections, giving us compelling insights into Scotland's international connections and Europe's growing chess craze in the Middle Ages. Our eleven chess pieces on display at the Museum of Scotland were part of a massive hoard buried deep within the island. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four complete chess sets as well as various other game pieces. These remarkable chess pieces were probably crafted in Norway around the late 12th or early 13th century.
