My friend who runs a creative cake business wanted to create some intricate letters for her decorations but could only purchase basic ones. This is what I came up with for her, you might find them useful too. I used a slicer hack to prevent printing inside the letter, so make sure to turn off infill and set top and bottom solid layers to zero. I usually use two perimeters for strength and better tolerance of extruder slippage. I have only created STLs for S and & (business name is S&S), so you will need to venture into the world of openSCAD to make your own, or use web fonts to get hearts and flowers. The grid backing serves as a holder for the inside parts of any letters in the correct position, as well as providing something to grasp. It has holes for poking a stick through to release the letter if necessary. If you want to print a word, consider using the fontmetrics functions created by the talented Mr. Pruss at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3004457. If not (maybe the font you want is unsupported), use the alternative values for height, h, and width, w currently commented out. I have included functions for sizing walls to be an integer number of threads thick, which I find gives a better print quality. There are settings for: word = "S"; // thing you want to cut out font = "Courier New:style=Bold Italic"; // the font you want to use size = 18; // size of the font base = 5; // number of layers in baseplate wall = threads(2); // must be set to less than number of perimeters in slicer n = 4; // the number of holes in the grid height = 10; // the height of the letters
