This equestrian statue of King Leopold II was inaugurated on November 15th, 1926, near the exact spot where he took the oath. Leopold II, born April 9, 1835, and passed away December 17, 1909, held the title of second King of the Belgians. He is infamous for establishing and exploiting the Congo Free State as a private enterprise. Born in Brussels to Leopold I and Louise of Orleans, he was their second son but eldest surviving child. In 1865, he ascended to the Belgian throne after his father's passing and ruled for 44 years until his death. His reign lasted longer than any other Belgian monarch.
