The Leopard Tank is a main battle tank designed and manufactured by German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Austrian company Steyr Mannlicher, as well as other companies that have licensed the technology. The tank has been in production since 1965 and has undergone several upgrades over the years. The Leopard 1 was first introduced to the world in 1965 at the IAA motor show in Frankfurt, Germany. It featured a new design with a modular armor system that provided improved protection for the crew without compromising mobility or firepower. The tank's main armament is the Rheinmetall Rh 105 mm smoothbore gun, which can fire various types of ammunition including high-explosive anti-tank rounds and APFSDS (armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot) rounds. The Leopard 2 has undergone several upgrades since its introduction in the late 1970s. It features improved armor, a new fire control system, and increased firepower with the addition of a 120 mm smoothbore gun. The tank's mobility has also been enhanced through the use of improved tracks and suspension systems. Leopard tanks have seen extensive service in various military conflicts around the world, including during the Falklands War and the Gulf War. They have proven themselves to be highly effective in a variety of combat roles, from infantry support to main battle engagements.
