The Lion of Saint Mark represents the evangelist St Mark in the form of a winged lion holding a Bible. The symbol is associated with the city of Venice, formerly the Republic of Venice, and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, See of Saint Mark. It appears on both merchant and military naval flags of Italy. The Lion of Saint Mark is also the symbol of the award given at the Venice Film Festival, known as the "Golden Lion", and of Assicurazioni Generali insurance company. Depictions often include a halo over the lion's head, a book in its paws, or a sword.
