Here is my final project for SGD114 Ship Part 4. In this assignment, I am asked to describe the different ship parts and how they work together as a system. Specifically, I will be focusing on the propulsion system of a commercial airliner. The first thing to consider when designing a propulsion system is the type of engine that will be used. There are several options available, including turbofans, turboprops, and piston engines. Turbofans are the most common type of engine used in commercial aviation today, as they offer a good balance between fuel efficiency and power output. The next component to consider is the compressor stage. This is where the air is compressed before being mixed with fuel and ignited. The compressor stage is typically made up of several stages, each one increasing the pressure and temperature of the air. Following the compressor stage is the combustor, also known as the combustion chamber. Here, the compressed air is mixed with fuel and ignited, producing a high-pressure gas that drives the turbine. The turbine is responsible for extracting energy from the hot gas produced by the combustion process. As the gas expands through the turbine blades, it spins the turbine, which in turn drives the compressor stage. Finally, the exhaust nozzle is where the hot gas is expelled out of the back of the engine, producing a high-velocity jet that propels the plane forward. In addition to the engine itself, there are several other components that play important roles in the propulsion system. These include the gearboxes, which transmit power from the turbine to the compressor stage; the fuel systems, which deliver fuel to the combustor; and the control systems, which regulate the flow of air and fuel through the engine. Overall, a well-designed propulsion system is critical to the safe and efficient operation of an aircraft. It must be able to produce enough thrust to overcome the weight of the plane and carry it forward at a steady speed.
