Lemnian Athena

The renowned sculptor Pheidias crafted an exquisite bronze Athena statue that proudly stood atop the Acropolis in Athens. Commissioned and paid for by a thriving colony of Athenians on the picturesque island of Lemnos, situated in the northern Aegean Sea, shortly after their arrival in 451 BCE. This Roman replica, discovered likely in Rome, was found without a head but has since been augmented with the addition of the Bologna Head. It is believed that Pheidias' original statue depicted Athena grasping a spear firmly in her left hand and holding a winged victory or libation bowl triumphantly aloft in her right. In contrast to many other depictions of Athena, it is thought that she did not wear a helmet in the original sculpture by Pheidias. Torso: From Dresden Palagi head: Bologna
