If the upper connection tube fails, simply replace it with this alternative piece and it will function flawlessly. This solution works like a charm for my 1989 Lego Excavator. To do this, carefully place the replacement tube over the joint and apply glue to secure it in place. Be cautious not to get glue on the inside of the tube.
