Looking to hang your Lego International Space Station from the ceiling? Using these models along with some fishing line and screws will allow you to do just that!

Print instructions

Printing

All files were printed with 20% infill and worked well. Increase the infill to make the hanger stiffer.

Parts

mk2_hanger_upper.stl

This is the main hanger, it can be used with or without the mk2_hanger_detail.stl piece which is purely decorative. The smooth side should face towards the ground with the extruded cylinders facing the ceiling.

mk2_string_caps.stl

To aid in attaching the fishing line to the main hanger 3 of these caps can be used to pinch the fishing line before glue or tying. If you opt to use the M3x8r screws to hold the fishing line these caps are not needed.

mk2_hanger_detail.stl

This piece can be optionally glued to the smooth side of the main hanger to provide some nice greeble action.

mk2_screw_cap.stl

This is used with the mk2_hanger_detail.stl to cover the screw holding the hanger to the ceiling. Do not glue this in place. If you want to take the hanger down the cap needs to be able to come off to access the screw.

Extra Parts

Fishing line

1 x 8X2 1/2" Particle Board Screw (or whatever length you need to go into a joist or drywall anchor)

Optional 3 x M3x8r machine screws for securing the fishing line to the main hanger.

Optional Superglue

Instructions

If using the detail piece; super glue the detail piece to the smooth side of the main hanger.

With the ISS on the stand tie 3 lengths of fishing line to the spots seen in the attached photos. Use slip knots to ensure a snug fit, and have the knots located on the underside of the model. (A small drop of superglue on the knots helps!)

Place the hanger in the same orientation as the model and feed the fishing line through the small holes.

Secure the fishing line to the hanger by using a M3x8r screw and looping it around the screw and then tightening it down. Alternatively, loop the fishing line around the screw post and use a screw cap to temporarily hold the fishing line. Don't forget to glue the cap in place or tie knots once the lengths are good.

Suspend the model from the hanger and adjust lengths of the fishing line. Trim and secure the fishing line when done.

Secure the hanging to the ceiling using the 8X2 1/2" (or other) screw. If using the detail piece use the screw cap to cover the screw head by press fitting it in place, do not use glue. Tip if you don't tighten the hanger to the ceiling too tight you will be able to rotate the hanger to adjust the hanging position of the model.

Stare up in wonder. If you were to hang the model at the right scale, with the floor being earth, your ceiling would need to be 1.7 km (1.1 miles) tall.
