A gantry crane is a type of crane built on a gantry - a structure that spans over an object or workspace. In marine applications, these cranes are massive structures commonly seen at container terminals, used for loading and unloading intermodal containers onto ships. They range from the largest "full" gantry cranes capable of lifting heavy loads to smaller shop cranes for tasks like engine removal from vehicles. Also referred to as portal cranes due to the open area beneath them, gantry and overhead cranes (or bridge cranes) are often used interchangeably because both types straddle their workload. While gantry crane structures are typically wheeled on rails, overhead cranes have a fixed support structure like building walls or ceilings with a movable hoist running above along rails or beams. Some gantry cranes may also feature a beam-mounted hoist that moves alongside the wheeled structure, and certain overhead cranes are suspended from freestanding gantries.
