Leeds and Northrup Galvanometer (Mad Max, Doof Warrior)
thingiverse
Part of Doof Warrior's flamethrower guitar is made from these Leeds and Northrup galvanometers, which I modeled using high-resolution pictures found online. Doof Warrior has 2 of these on his guitar. I kept some parts separate for easier finishing and painting. You can also print the combined version in one shot. I provide a sheet of dial graphics as SVG, including 100%, 98%, and 102% scale dials in multiple copies so you can easily find one that fits. Paper printers can be inaccurate, but I've got you covered with plain white background and brown background versions. The calibration bar is 3" by 0.25", so you can see how accurate your paper printer really is. The dial pointer can be left out, but I just glued a random piece of discarded plastic in there because it was thin enough to use. I painted the tip red for good measure. Remember that the pivot point is close to the big knob on the real version. I didn't bother modeling the text on the knob, so you're free to add your own flair. I finished this project with plain black spray paint and antique gold rub'n'buff on the little nub thing. A plain acrylic wash and some abuse with a file gave it a weathered look. I also cut out a piece of acrylic for the window using a clever trick: I spray glued one of the dial templates onto a piece of acrylic, shaped it to fit on the belt sander, and voila! The WD-40 easily removes the adhesive afterwards.
