Design flourished with the launch of a groundbreaking project, marking the first attempt to harness ramjet technology in a practical way since its inception. Building upon advancements made by research aircraft such as the 0.10 and 0.21 models over the preceding years, this new endeavor brought together innovators seeking to revolutionize aviation. Notable design elements differentiated this aircraft from previous Leduc models: swept wings enabled more efficient aerodynamics while a unique turbojet-ramjet powerplant facilitated solo flight capabilities, defying conventional norms. First Flight After an inaugural run on 26 December 1956 utilizing only its turbojet engine, engineers waited patiently until the 34th test for their breakthrough moment: the ignition of the ramjet, marking this day, 18 May 1957. A further 80 trials took place, showcasing determination in a mission cut short by the choice to favor more conventional models like the Dassault Mirage III; construction had just begun on a second prototype. Conclusion Although its intended purpose was as a supersonic fighter, operational realities showed that exceeding Mach 1 remained elusive due to unwanted drag produced when its non-optimized fuselage moved through air close to sonic speeds.
