It's much simpler to gauge your printer's performance when you have a reliable light source on the platform. To provide illumination, I created clips that securely hold a 12-volt white LED strip by twisting them into the rail of the printer. Since the power supply is 24 volts, you'll need a step-down DC-DC converter to energize the LED strip. You can purchase a compact LM2596-based board for a few dollars on Amazon or EBay and then design a small enclosure for it (there are many models available).
