I purchased a large quantity of MAX7219 8x8 LED Matrices from an eBay electronics components vendor I frequently buy from in China. Despite the lengthy delivery time, their affordability and reliability make it worth stocking up on parts for potential future projects. These displays are easily controlled by either a Raspberry Pi or Arduino and can be connected together to create longer display screens with ease. A quick search will yield numerous tutorials and open-source libraries, enabling you to get started right away. Given the size of my printer, I designed this project using SketchUp to accommodate four matrices, linking them together with connectors - another eBay purchase - though soldering is always an option.
