I wanted to illuminate my printbed even more to get a better view of what was happening and to make time lapses look clearer through Octoprint. It will function just fine without the cover piece, but I preferred the cover to conceal the wires and LED leads. I have mine configured with 2 3.3v clear LEDs linked to a 2xAA battery pack featuring a switch ( planning on connecting them to the GPIO of my Raspberry Pi running Octoprint soon ) Depending on how accurately calibrated your printer is, you may need to enlarge the LED holes slightly. The ridges inside the cover piece are not retaining clips; they're meant to serve as stops to prevent the cover from being pressed too far over the LED holder. Mine friction-fit together but I applied a bit of hot glue to securely fasten the cover in place. It friction-fitted onto my printer quite well and remains steady during each print.
